People ALWAYS show you who they are in the little things first.

That’s why small commitments are a preview of what’s to come.

And so, what I love about dating isn’t just the nights out or the romping around in bed — it’s the ‘figuring this out process’ that’s often the most interesting part.

Because dating isn’t just about checking off a box and moving straight into a relationship.

Plus, in a functioning relationship, dating isn’t something that should just end once you’re in it. Dating is ongoing. It’s a preview of the entire thing.

If someone is already making excuses now — for basic, simple, easy, little things like showing up for a date — they’re never going to take accountability when things get real.

If they can’t commit to something small (like a coffee date), what makes you think they’ll commit to something big (like a serious relationship)?

Instead, there will always be a million and one excuses for why they can’t communicate, why they can’t meet you halfway, and why they ‘just can’t right now.’

Underneath it all, excuses are about dodging responsibility.

Consistency isn’t hard when someone actually values you.

If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in the cycle of giving someone one more chance — only to get hit with another excuse — you’re not alone.

Excuses start small, but they reveal everything about a person’s character.

In this piece, I’m breaking down exactly how to recognize these patterns early, why small commitments matter more than you think, and how to stop wasting time on people who can’t even meet you halfway.

If you’re tired of the same old dating frustrations, this will help you spot red flags before you get too invested.
